Hi folks!
Wow, this wintery spring has everyone feeling a bit of cabin fever. I do apologize for publishing this newsletter later than expected. My family finally took a weeklong vacation for Spring Break at the beginning of the month. We decided to go camping in New Bern, North Carolina and unplug. The weather was a bit uncooperative, but we enjoyed the time away nonetheless.
Please spread the word…Surf Rider will be opening up for the season on Monday, April 30th!!!!! We were sad to see the closing of O’Leary’s in the Fall and after not having a home for our monthly socials all winter long we’re looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. We hope to see you all at the May Member Social at Surf Rider.
Thank you to everyone who voted for Marina Shores as Best of the Beach 2018!! We should hear the results of this year’s contest by May. Let’s get this 2018 boating season started!
In this issue:
Please keep in mind, all leases, even month-to-month leases, require a 30 day notice to cancel the auto-renewal of your lease. If your lease ends on 05/31/2018, your notice needs to be submitted by 05/01/2018 at the latest.
We are always interested in feedback. If you have any comments or suggestions please send us an email.
Happy boating everyone!
Taylor (757) 496-7000

April, 2, 2018 we received the news we have been waiting for. The ownership of the Dry Storage Leased Premises has been transferred. As a result, Marina Shores Dry Storage will be officially closing September 30, 2018. With so many rumors and so much time to ponder worst case scenarios, I think it best to break down the facts section by section. *Cartoon illustrations were provided by long-time Marina Shores member and friend, Jimmy Kolb. If you’ve been in Taylor’s office recently, you’ve seen Jimmy’s gallery of work.
The 2018 boating season will be our final season with dry storage services. Many dates were considered when planning the demolition and we’re happy to announce we were able to hold off construction until Fall 2018. All dry storage services will be closing on September 30th. We will be using the month of October to clear out the dry storage as demolition is scheduled to begin November 5, 2018. After September 30, there will no longer be dry storage services, except for trailer loads for termination.
The Yacht Club at Marina Shores will continue to host weddings and special events through the end of October. The events spaces and administration office are also scheduled for demolition beginning November 5th, 2018.
The property west of the swimming pool is planned for demolition, including the commercial office kiosks (boat brokers), wedding facility, administration office, dock shop, fueling station, dry storage, outside dry storage and service area. Remaining, will be the swimming pool, pool bathrooms, Surf Rider Restaurant, holding piers in front of dry storage, two long docks in front of the Dock Shop and all existing wet slips.
I’m sure you can imagine we will have quite a bit of equipment and inventory to clear off the property in October. Racks, ladders, trailers, boats, furniture, decor, and more will be for sale. If you, or someone you know, is interested in our equipment or other inventory, please contact us.
As tragic as this news may seem, I’d like to ask everyone to also think of our beloved and loyal staff who have been with us for so many years. A wet slip marina requires much less staff to maintain and although we would love to keep our entire crew with us after the construction, it is just not feasible. Most, if not all, are planning on staying through the transition to help with the clearing, the demo, and overall reorganization. After this period, our employees will be looking for their next big adventure. Again, if you or someone you know is interested in loyal and talented staff, please feel free to contact us or feel free to speak with our employees directly. They deserve the best.
All current leases will remain as they are and expire on their lease end date or September 30, 2018, whichever comes first. No dry storage lease will be allowed to renew for a term longer than our September 30th closing date. As your renewal date approaches, please feel free to discuss changing the term of your lease and we’ll be happy to work with you when your lease is up.
Some members have mentioned they may be selling their boat at the end of the 2018 season. Others have mentioned they would be looking to buy one or more boats once dry storage closes. If you are interested in either, we are keeping a list of people who are selling and people who are buying. Please let us know if you would like to be added to this list.
I am happy to say we have a wonderful boating community in South Hampton Roads. Two marinas in particular have partnered with Marina Shores so we may be of assistance in this transition and help our customers find their next dry storage home.
Vinings Landing Marina, off Shore Drive in Norfolk, offers the same amenities as Marina Shores. They provide dry storage, wet slips, floating docks, swimming pool, fuel, and a restaurant. Please call Lisa at (757) 587-8000 to discuss rates and options.
Top Rack Marina, in Chesapeake, offers a dry storage boatel on the ICW with fuel, boat service and the Amber Lantern Restaurant. Please call Brian McKown at (757) 227-3041 to discuss rates and options.
I personally traveled to each marina and visited with the staff to learn more about their operations. I know each team will take good care of our dry storage members.
Planning is still underway for the new Marina Shores but we’re excited to keep you updated as things progress. You can see a 2015 rendering of the apartment complex that is scheduled to replace the dry storage and event facilities. These apartments will be owned and operated by a separate entity with their own pool and courtyard. They will not be a part of Marina Shores Marina nor will they have allotted wet slips. All wet slips will remain as Marina Shores property, managed only by Marina Shores.
Our wet slips will be getting a much needed facelift with new wood, electric pedestals and fixtures. There are no changes anticipated for the swimming pool or Surf Rider Restaurant.
Each boat storage account is allotted two (2) guest pool passes each year so friends and family can join you at the pool!
Guest passes for active members will be available for pick up inside the Admin Office beginning Tuesday, May 1st. There will be no replacement guest passes available once you’ve picked up your two cards so please be careful with them.
As your lease renews, please contact Admin to request new 2018 member cards to be made for you.
Sadly, this will be the LAST Virginia Beach Tuna Tournament held at Marina Shores. Next year, they will be relocating due to our redevelopment. We hope everyone comes to celebrate with us one last time in the parking lot.
We will take night launch requests until 5:00pm so boats can be accessible and will resume normal operational hours Sunday morning at 7am.
E-Dock will be very full this week with transient anglers for the tournament so please plan accordingly.
Thank you for your cooperation.

The Marina at Marina Shores is committed to creating and maintaining a safe and enjoyable marina environment for all members of the marina community, our visitors and guests. We are proud to have a beautiful facility that provides clean, green and safe places to recreate and bring the boating communities together.
The responsibility falls on all of us to create a welcoming marina environment. This means taking measures designed to prevent someone from being hurt or feeling threatened. Therefore, we request that you comply with the marina policy that requires your dog to be on a leash at all times while on marina property, including individual docks.
This policy is based on Virginia Beach City Code (Ord. No. 3072, 3-24-09; Ord. No. 3223, 3-13-12) that states, in part:
Only you know if your dog is dangerous or not, and many people have very real fears about dogs. Children and elders especially cannot protect themselves from unwelcome advances. It is important that all members of the Marina Shores community, our visitors and guests feel safe while on marina property and that includes knowing that dogs are restrained.
This letter serves as an official written warning. Persons found to be in further violation of this policy, will receive one additional warning. Further violations by members of the marina will result in a $20.00 citation; further violations by non-marina members will result in the violator(s) being considered as trespassing on marina property.
